Neuromodulator injections for wrinkles
Neuromodulator Injections for Wrinkles
Expression lines like frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet are often the first signs of aging. Neuromodulator injections – commonly known as anti-wrinkle injections – are a non-surgical treatment to help smooth these dynamic wrinkles. By injecting a purified botulinum toxin into targeted facial muscles, we temporarily relax overactive muscle contractions. The result is a reduction in wrinkle depth and a more refreshed, youthful appearance, while still allowing you to make natural expressions.
At Dermanom Aesthetic, all anti-wrinkle injections are performed by a medical professional. We use extremely fine needles to minimize discomfort, and the procedure is quick – typically about 10-15 minutes for a standard treatment. Effects are not immediate; you’ll start to notice smoothing in 3-5 days, with full results visible at around 10-14 days post-treatment. The goal is a subtle, well-rested look rather than a “frozen” face. We adjust doses carefully to your muscle strength and desired outcome.
How It Works
Neuromodulators block nerve signals to specific facial muscles. When those muscles don’t contract with full strength, the overlying skin can relax and lie flat. For example, injections into the glabellar region (between the brows) prevent deep frown lines, and treatment around the eyes softens crow’s feet. We commonly treat areas such as:
- Forehead lines and frown lines: Smooths horizontal forehead creases and the vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows.
- Crow’s feet: Softens the fan of lines at the outer corners of the eyes that appear when smiling.
- Brow lift: Strategic injections can gently lift the eyebrows for a more open look.
- Bunny lines: Reduces scrunch lines on the nose bridge.
- Lip flip: A few units above the upper lip can roll the lip out subtly for a fuller appearance.
- Neck bands: Relaxes platysmal bands (the “turkey neck” lines) for a smoother neck contour.
The injections themselves are tolerable – many patients compare the sensation to a tiny pinprick or an ant bite, lasting only seconds. For those concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream or ice can be applied beforehand, though most find it unnecessary. After injection, we advise you to frown and move treated muscles for a few minutes (this may help the neuromodulator distribute evenly), then keep the area at rest.
Pre- and Post-Treatment Care
Pre-Care: To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) for a few days before your appointment if medically permissible – check with your doctor. Come to your appointment with a clean face (no makeup or moisturizers on the areas to be treated). If you have an active skin infection (like cold sores at the injection site) or are unwell, let us know – we may need to reschedule. It’s also recommended not to consume alcohol the night before and on the day of treatment, as it can increase bruising risk.
Post-Care: Remain upright for at least 4 hours after injections – do not lie down or invert (no yoga, strenuous exercise, or heavy lifting) during this time, as this helps prevent the product from migrating. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours. You should also skip facials, facial massages, or saunas for 1-2 days. Mild redness or small bumps at injection sites are common immediately after treatment and usually subside within 30 minutes. Bruising is possible but typically minor; you can apply arnica gel or a cool pack gently if needed. Makeup can be applied after about 4 hours, but ideally wait until the next day to ensure injection points are closed. We will provide you with aftercare instructions and are available if you have any concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do the results last?
Anti-wrinkle injection effects are temporary. On average, results last about 3 to 4 months. First-timers might notice a slightly shorter duration, while repeat treatments can sometimes last longer (up to 5-6 months) as targeted muscles may become trained to relax. We recommend maintenance treatments 3-4 times a year to keep wrinkles at bay, though the exact timing is up to you and how your muscles recover movement.
Is it safe?
Yes – when administered by a qualified professional in appropriate doses, neuromodulator injections are very safe. Botulinum toxin has been used medically for decades. We only use TGA-approved products. Common side effects are injection-related and minor: slight swelling, redness, or bruising at the site, which are temporary. Rarely, patients may experience a headache or a heavy brow feeling for a short time. A very small percentage risk exists for temporary eyelid droop or asymmetry if the toxin affects a neighboring muscle; however, careful technique and following post-care (not rubbing the area) makes this unlikely. The dose used for cosmetic treatments is very small and stays localized. There is no long-term damage to nerves or muscles – full movement returns once the toxin wears off.
When will I see results?
Results are not instant. You might start seeing subtle relaxation of lines in 2-3 days, but the most noticeable smoothing happens by 7-10 days. By 14 days, the full effect is realized. We schedule a follow-up at the 2-week mark if possible, to assess your results. If any touch-up is needed (for example, a little additional product to perfectly balance a brow), we can do it at that time. It’s important to wait the full two weeks before evaluating the final outcome.
Will I look frozen or expressionless?
Our philosophy is that you should still look like you – just a more relaxed, refreshed version. The “frozen” look usually comes from over-treatment. At Dermanom Aesthetic, we use conservative dosing especially for first treatments, aiming for natural movement. You will still be able to laugh, frown, and express emotion, just with fewer wrinkles. In fact, many people won’t realize you’ve “had something done” – only that you look well-rested. We can always add more at a later time if needed, but we take a “less is more” approach initially to ensure a soft, flattering result.
Are there any people who shouldn’t get this treatment?
Neuromodulator injections are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it hasn’t been tested in these populations. If you have a neurological disorder (such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome) or a history of allergic reaction to toxin ingredients, you may not be a candidate. During your consultation, Dr. Tokman will review your medical history to ensure it’s safe for you. Also, if you have significant sagging in an area, relaxing muscles might not give the desired effect – in such cases, other treatments like fillers or surgical referral might be recommended instead.
Can these injections be used for anything other than wrinkles?
Yes, the botulinum toxin has a number of medical uses beyond cosmetics. In our practice, we primarily use it for aesthetic purposes, but you might have heard of it helping with excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), jaw clenching (masseter injections can slim the jawline and help TMJ pain), migraines, and more. These are specialized treatments that Dr. Tokman can discuss if relevant to you. However, for cosmetic patients, the most common additional benefit is a reduction in tension headaches if they stem from frowning, since those muscles are relaxed post-treatment.
